TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Douyin are built so the next clip is always better than stopping. A 2025 meta-analysis of 71 studies and 98,299 people found that heavier short-form video use is associated with weaker attention, weaker inhibitory control, and more stress and anxiety.
That is an association, not a courtroom verdict. It is also no longer “just a vibe.”

The research is about the format: ultra-short clips, autoplay, personalization, no last page. Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Douyin and Kuaishou share the same machinery.
It is not a standalone DSM diagnosis. The pattern is real: compulsive use, failed attempts to stop, sleep and focus getting hit. Researchers usually say “problematic use” or “short-video addiction” as a research construct, not a clinic stamp.
No study on this site proves that. Heavier use is associated with poorer attention and inhibitory control in both youth and adults. That can look like ADHD symptoms without being ADHD. If focus problems are serious, see a clinician — don’t crowdsource a diagnosis from a feed.
